Rankin.
my favourite Rankins portraits.
I think that this portrait of Cara Delevingne is beautiful. She is wearing minimal eye make up, which makes her eyes look enlarged and eyelashes look long and pretty. Her skin is perfect with no flaws. With her hair tied back so it is not in shot makes her eyebrows look dark and well shaped. The contouring of her makeup look defined. Where the photo is in black and white all of her features look more defined. This photo shows none of her identity, where she is straight faced with no emotion showing she is hiding her feelings and personality from the camera. Rankin has used a soft light to take this picture because it isn't a harsh light across her face, her face and the background are both subtle showing the use of soft lighting and a soft flash.

I also really like this portrait of Miley Cyrus because there is so much detail to it. She is wearing slight eye make up and her body, face and hair it covered in glitter. The glitter represents her bright and over the top personality. She hasn't got a very obvious facial expression, she looks quite hard and as if she is hiding how she really feels. The glitter is a cover up of her real personality out of the public eye. The way she is looking directly at the camera shows she is confident on the outside however the way her hands are on her face show a sign of shyness and awkwardness. In this photo only Mileys head and arms are in focus and the rest of her body are out of focus. This photos lighting is a contrast to the one above of Cara, this has very harsh and bright studio lighting to make her skin seem flawless and to make the glitter of her body shine and reflect off the flash and light.

recreating a Rankin image.
While researching the theme of Identity I experimented with different lighting, angles, backgrounds, objects around and different facial expressions. I tried to keep the backgrounds as simple as possible, one image has a slightly busy background but it isn't in focus.
My response to rankin.
I chose two images from my response to Rankin, I then edited them. On the first one I cropped it down to just the upper body, I then selected black and white and adjusted the levels to make certain features stand out, for example I lowered the blue and red levels to make her eyebrows and lips more prominent.
With the second image I didn't need to crop it down because that's how I took the photo. All I did to this one was adjust the black and white levels to make her features more detailed. I lowered the red for her eyebrows and lips, the blue to make her eyes darker and raised the magentas slightly to make her skin look absolutely perfect.

my response to rankins cut out images.
This is another form of Rankins work. I like this style of photography because you can only see a small part of the persons face, which only gives you a small idea about their identity.
